SOUTH LEBANON — Hezbollah on Wednesday fired more than 100 rockets at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon and, for the first time since the fighting resumed in early March, claimed attacks on an Israeli warplane and helicopter, as clashes along the border escalate.

Hezbollah said it had targeted an Israeli military helicopter that “was trying to land to evacuate the wounded, using an air defense missile, forcing it to withdraw.” It added that it had fired on “an Israeli warplane ... with surface-to-air missiles on Tuesday afternoon, forcing it to retreat.”

Hezbollah also claimed to have fired more than one hundred rockets at Israeli soldiers in northern Israel, as well as at Naqoura (Sour) and Qawzah (Bint Jbeil), two localities where the Israeli army is attempting to advance.

At the same time, intense exchanges of fire are taking place in the northeastern sector of Khiam (Marjayoun), where the Israeli army has been trying to make progress for two weeks, according to our correspondent in the region.

These attacks come as Israel is trying to isolate southern Lebanon by bombing strategic bridges and emptying it of its inhabitants.

Reporting contributed by our regional correspondent, Muntasser Abdallah.
