BEIRUT — After interrogating two Hezbollah supporters who were arrested earlier this month at Lebanese Army checkpoints while transporting rockets, the chief military investigative judge Ghada Abou Alouane issued arrest warrants for them on Tuesday.

A judicial source told L’Orient-Le Jour that the judge is expected to schedule a new hearing to continue her investigation. Once the inquiry is complete, she will send the case file to the government commissioner at the military tribunal, Claude Ghanem, for his opinion, which will not be binding.

She will then issue the indictment and refer the two detainees to the military court. These two are among the four Hezbollah members of the party against whom Ghanem initiated proceedings on March 16.

The judge referred them for investigation based on the law that classifies transporting heavy artillery as a crime. According to our information, the two defendants were transporting 21, 122 mm shells as well as machine guns,

The other two Hezbollah members arrested were charged with the misdemeanor of transporting light weapons. One of them was detained for 12 days before Judge Alouane ordered his release against a bail of 60 million Lebanese Liras (about $667). The other was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by investigating judge Rayan Nasr, pending the issuance of the indictment.

In a previous incident, four armed Hezbollah members, detained for carrying light weapons for six days, were acquitted on March 9 by the military court. Each of them secured their release for a bail of 21 dollars. A judicial source explained the leniency of these sentences by noting that previously, people found with rifles and pistols were not even subject to arrest.

She indicated that these measures were adopted following Cabinet's decision on March 2, which now deems Hezbollah’s activities illegal.

At the same time as the hearing for the two individuals accused of transporting rockets, a sit-in was organized by a group of lawyers close to Hezbollah, al-Houqouqiyoun al-Wataniyoun (National Jurists). This collective believes that "the prosecutions against the Resistance fighters constitute a blatant violation of the law," asserting that they "sacrifice themselves for Lebanon and its people."
