BEIRUT — The civilian killed Sunday morning in Misgav Am, in northern Israel, was hit by fire from Israeli artillery, said Rafi Milo, the general in charge of the Israeli army's Northern Command.

"This is a very serious incident. Ofer Moskovitch was killed by fire from our own forces during an operation aimed at protecting civilians," Rafi Milo said following a military investigation.

Moskovitch was struck by "artillery fire carried out to support forces operating in southern Lebanon," an incident caused by "multiple serious operational failures and errors in the planning and execution of the fire."

He specified that the shells "were fired at an incorrect angle and not in accordance with required procedures. As a result, five shells hit the ridge of Misgav Am instead of striking enemy targets." A more in-depth investigation has been launched.

Hezbollah had claimed responsibility for several rocket attacks on Misgav Am during the day on Sunday.
