Missiles intercepted over Doha as Qatar closes airspace amid regional escalation

Several explosions were heard across Doha on Saturday, as Qatar’s Ministry of Defense announced that it had intercepted multiple missile attacks targeting the Gulf state.

Blasts were reported over central Doha and near Al-Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the region. An AFP journalist saw a missile being destroyed by an interceptor in a cloud of white smoke. In a statement, the Qatari Defense Ministry said it had “repelled a number of attacks.”

Meanwhile, the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority announced that the country’s airspace had been temporarily closed following U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. In a statement, the authority said it was “temporarily suspending air traffic as part of a series of precautionary measures.” Qatar Airways also confirmed it had “temporarily suspended” all flights to and from Doha due to the closure of Qatari airspace.
