BEIRUT — The Lebanese Army announced Friday that it had seized a mobile laboratory intended for the manufacture of captagon in the Harf al-Sammaqa region, in the Hermel jurd highlands.

"As part of efforts to combat drug trafficking in various Lebanese regions, and following thorough surveillance and monitoring operations, a patrol from the Directorate of Intelligence seized a mobile laboratory set up in a van and equipped for the manufacture of captagon," said the statement issued by the Orientation Directorate. The army added that it had also seized "a significant quantity of raw materials as well as equipment used in the manufacture of narcotics."

The Lebanese Army and security services have stepped up their fight against drug trafficking in recent months, under pressure from Gulf states and the United States. In mid-September of last year, the army announced the seizure of around 64 million captagon pills in the Bekaa, noting that it was one of the largest operations ever conducted against this substance in Lebanon.
