Security forces on Saturday urged residents of the Ridani building on the Beddawi highway in Tripoli to evacuate quickly after significant cracks were discovered in the structure, our North Lebanon correspondent reported.
The families fled in haste, unsure where to go. They gathered in the street in fear and distress, waiting for safe shelter to be arranged. The five-story building housed eight families.
Since the start of winter, several evacuations and deadly collapses have occurred in Tripoli, largely because of neglect and a lack of maintenance. Authorities have repeatedly warned of a growing risk of further collapses in the city — the poorest in Lebanon — where infrastructure continues to deteriorate amid chronic funding shortages.
