The resignation of the head of Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Unit, Wafiq Safa, which has drawn intense media attention in recent days, was confirmed Saturday by Mahmoud Qomati, vice president of the party’s political council, in remarks to OTV, a channel close to the Free Patriotic Movement.

Comati said Hezbollah would soon issue an official statement on the matter. “Wafiq Safa has a long history within the party and played a major role in the responsibilities entrusted to him,” he said, adding that Safa could “hold an even more important position in the future,” without elaborating.

Reuters reported Friday that the senior security official had resigned. Safa oversaw internal coordination, relations with political factions, and communication with state authorities and security agencies. According to Al-Jadeed television, Hussein Abdallah has been appointed to replace him.

According to information obtained by L’Orient-Le Jour, Safa had fallen out with the party’s secretary-general, Naim Qassem. His approach and priorities “no longer aligned with those of Hezbollah, notably his radical and inflexible stance,” a senior official from the party said.

Safa is widely regarded as a key figure in the movement’s hardline wing and is known for his provocative style.

During its last war with Hezbollah in 2024, Israel attempted at least once to assassinate the party’s so-called “special missions man,” launching two strikes on buildings in Basta al-Fawqa and the neighboring Noueiri district on Oct. 10. The attack killed around 20 people.
