BEIRUT — Former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah's father, Abdel Karim Nasrallah, passed away, according the official state-run National News Agency (NNA) and Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television channel.
According to the Lebanese daily An-Nahar, Abdel Karim’s health had severely deteriorated in the two days leading up to his death. The funeral took place on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Rawda al-Shahidein complex in Ghobeiri, in southern Beirut.
The funeral prayer was led by Ali Daamouch, head of Hezbollah's executive council. The procession, accompanied by members of Hezbollah and the Amal movement, then proceeded to the "Martyrs of the Islamic Resistance" cemetery in Ghobeiry, where Hassan Nasrallah's father was buried in the mausoleum of his grandson, Hadi Hassan Nasrallah. Hadi was Hassan Nasrallah's eldest son, and was killed in 1997 at the age of 18 in a Hezbollah ambush on Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon.
An 'exemplary educator'
Hezbollah and the Amal movement expressed condolences to the Nasrallah family, as did Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who paid tribute in a letter published via the Iranian embassy’s X account in Lebanon. In the letter, Araghchi expressed his “deep sorrow” and praised Abdel Karim Nasrallah for his “valuable educational role” in raising “a son who became a fighter and resistor.”
Meanwhile, Ali al-Khatib, vice president of the Higher Shiite Council, honored him as an “exemplary educator and great fighter” who “built a family that has offered the nation, Lebanon, and its people the most precious of sacrifices.”
Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s emblematic leader, who had led the party for more than 30 years, was killed in a series of powerful Israeli strikes on Sept. 27, 2024, on the southern suburbs of Beirut during Israel's last war.
Official and popular farewells to the secretary-general, and to his brief successor Hashem Safieddine, took place after a cease-fire with Israel was concluded on Feb. 23, 2025.
Hassan Nasrallah’s mother, Nahdiya Safieddine, died a few months before his assassination, on May 25, 2024.
