'It gets closer every day': Gaza's silent partition by the 'Yellow Line'

The Israeli army is expanding its provisional control zone on the ground. Its ambiguous demarcation is crystallizing a new border that traps Palestinians and exposes them to gunfire.

Mohammad al-Zawarah and his cousin Suleiman, aged 15 and 14, were going to collect firewood near Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza when they were targeted by the Israeli army on Saturday, Jan. 24.According to the army, "the presence of terrorists who crossed the Yellow Line and placed an explosive device in the area and approached the troops" constituted an "immediate threat" to its men stationed east of the demarcation line dividing the enclave in two. Anyone who approaches "must know they may be hit," Defense Minister Israel Katz warned in October.However, the military command told its troops that the method should be more "controlled" when children are involved.
