Syrian authorities announced Monday that they had foiled an attempt to smuggle weapons and ammunition into Lebanon, according to information reported by the official Syrian news agency, SANA.

The operation was carried out in the Qousseir region in western Syria, just steps from the Lebanese border, thanks to intelligence regarding the movements of a suspicious vehicle. The weapons were set to transit to Lebanon via the Syrian locality of Boureij, in the southwest of the country, according to SANA.

A security source told the news agency that security forces intercepted a Chevrolet vehicle loaded with nine Konkurs anti-tank guided missiles, 68 RPG cartridges, two 107 mm rockets, and five cases of BKS ammunition.

They also searched the network’s cache in the locality of Jreijir, where the weapons came from, and discovered Russian warehouses and binoculars that can be used during the day. Searches are ongoing to apprehend all those involved in this operation.

Syrian authorities have made several seizures of weapons or drugs intended for smuggling between Lebanon and Syria in recent months. In December 2025, Damascus announced it had thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons to Lebanon, in the Zabadani region in southwestern Syria, not far from the Lebanese border.

After the fall of Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown in December 2024 by an Islamist coalition, the new Syrian authorities have intensified the fight against smuggling, notably cutting Hezbollah’s supply routes, as the group sourced weapons through Syria. In early December, Syrian authorities killed a man and arrested four others who were attempting to smuggle a large quantity of mines into Lebanon, destined for the Shiite party.
