In a 300-page report, the Higher Judicial Council detailed political interference and other challenges facing the judiciary, outlining measures to protect judicial independence and ensure its continued work.

HJC issues stark assessment of 2019-2024 period

The Higher Judicial Council (HJC) published last week a report on the state of justice in Lebanon between 2019 and 2024, a period spanning from the onset of the severe, multifaceted crisis that shook the country to the election of President Joseph Aoun in January 2025.Entitled “The Judiciary: Unprecedented Crises, Existential Challenges and Prospects for Solutions,” the report is designed to “reflect the judicial reality in its multiple dimensions and repercussions.”In the report’s preamble, HJC President Souheil Abboud set the tone, lamenting from the outset that “political bodies and forces generally do not want an independent judiciary,” and that “each seeks a justice aligned with its own interests,” thereby denouncing what he described as a “tailor-made judiciary.” Here's a primer first Hacking Lebanese Politics #27: How does...
