During the civil war, the Commodore Hotel became a refuge for the international press, a legendary place where history was written as it happened. Its permanent closure on Jan. 12 marks the end of a chapter in Lebanese history.

During the years leading up to the Lebanese Civil War, as well as those that followed, Beirut's Commodore Hotel was nothing particularly remarkable.
