In Beirut’s southern suburbs, a cat shelter survives crises and war

In Hadath, Beirut’s southern suburbs, Diana has been running a shelter for abandoned cats for nearly 12 years.

What began with a single rescue became a long-term commitment, rooted in a childhood memory that never left her. Since September 2024, the war has intensified the pressure, with cats still being found injured, dumped or left behind.

Diana has had to relocate them while navigating rising costs and scarce housing options. With little outside support, she keeps watch over the shelter herself and prioritizes trusted adoptions to ensure the cats remain safe, even if she can no longer care for them herself.
