Turkey’s foreign minister said Saturday that disarming the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas should not be the primary objective in Gaza, as mediators continue efforts to negotiate the second phase of President Donald Trump’s peace plan.

“Disarmament cannot be the first step in this process. We need to proceed in the correct order and remain realistic,” Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said when asked about calls to disarm Hamas.
