It all began with a gruesome murder and a sectarian-sounding message written with blood at the crime scene. “Dogs of Bani Umayyad, ya Hussein,” read the Arabic inscription on the bathroom wall of the couple killed on Sunday evening, Nov. 23, in the Zaidal suburb on the eastern outskirts of Homs. The man had his throat slit, and the woman was burned alive; they had lived there for about thirty years.The killing quickly sparked tensions in this mixed city along the Damascus-Aleppo road.
