Conscription law: 'Jordanian leaders are anxious about the breakdown of the socioeconomic fabric'

Jordan will reinstate compulsory military service as of 2026, previously abolished in 1991. We spoke with Jalal al-Husseini, researcher at the French Institute of the Near East, to find out more.

After months of preparation, the law passed through the Jordanian Parliament last Monday and now awaits ratification by the Senate and King Abdullah II's signature to go into effect. The process is not expected to face obstacles, since there is broad consensus in Jordan around the reform announced by Crown Prince Hussein last August regarding the return to military service.Abolished in 1991, a few years before the peace treaty with Israel was signed, compulsory conscription is expected to be reinstated as early as February 2026 for 6,000 young men born in 2007, with the aim of increasing that number to 10,000 adults per year in the future.The crown prince argued that Jordanians should be prepared to serve and defend their country, saying the program would strengthen national identity and foster ties to the nation.
