BEIRUT — The return of stormy weather on Thursday night brought torrential rain and strong wind to southern Lebanon, where a storm mainly struck the coastal area of Sour. The storms caused some material damage but no casualties, according to information from our correspondent in the region.

Homes belonging to Palestinian refugee families in the Jal al-Bahr neighborhood in the northern outskirts of the city were notably flooded. Along the Sour corniche, a giant, century-old palm tree collapsed by the force of the wind, blocking the road until clearing operations were carried out Friday morning to remove debris from other fallen trees in several neighborhoods of the city. The storm also damaged the electricity network along the waterfront, while some advertising billboards were torn down.

Powerful lightning strikes were recorded in the locality of Bablieh, south of Saida, and Mount Safi in the Iqlim al-Touffah region. Additionally, five cars skidded on the Shouqin-Nabatieh road.

Despite the damage, a resident noted that "the sound of thunder is still preferable to the explosions of Israeli strikes," in a south Lebanon that is targeted with near-daily attacks by Israel.
