At least 31 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed in overnight and early-morning Israeli strikes Sunday, according to Gaza Civil Defense, as negotiations in Doha for a new truce continue to stall.
According to statements to AFP by Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for the emergency services organization, at least eight people — several of them children — were killed in overnight Israeli bombings targeting homes in Gaza City (north). Ten others died in another raid on the Nuseirat refugee camp (central Gaza), he added.
On Sunday morning, eight Palestinians were killed near a water distribution point, also in Nuseirat. Three others were killed in a raid on the Al-Mawassi displaced persons camp (south), which is supposed to be a "humanitarian zone."
'132 shot near GHF sites'
Israeli attacks on the Palestinian enclave remain just as intense despite the resumption of indirect talks between Israel and Hamas toward a possible new truce. However, both sides have accused each other of stalling the negotiations, which began July 6 in Doha through international mediator s —Qatar, Egypt, and the United States — to end more than 21 months of devastating war in Gaza.
The previous day, the enclave’s Health Ministry had reported at least 70 Palestinians killed in attacks carried out throughout the day by the Israeli army across the besieged territory, along with 208 wounded. According to medical sources cited by Al Jazeera, the toll could be as high as 110 Palestinians killed, including 34 shot near the only functioning food distribution site in the Gaza Strip. On the same day, the town of Beit Hanoun, at the northern edge of the enclave, was hit by nearly 50 Israeli bombs.
According to Al Jazeera, at least 28 people — including several children — were killed in airstrikes targeting homes in Gaza City (north). Eight of them died in overnight strikes, according to Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Bassal, speaking to AFP. On Sunday afternoon, an Israeli drone strike hit Gaza City's market, killing at least 15 people, including Ahmad Qandil, a surgeon at al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, according to Al Jazeera’s local correspondents.
Additionally, 20 people were killed in the Nuseirat refugee camp (central Gaza): 12 in an airstrike, and eight near a potable water distribution point. Three more people were killed in a raid on the al-Mawasi displacement camp (south), which is nominally designated a “humanitarian zone.”
'A new, unbearable burden”
In its daily update, Gaza’s Health Ministry announced Sunday that at least 139 Palestinians had been killed and 425 injured in Israeli attacks over the past 24 hours. The statement noted that 28 of the victims were killed while attempting to access humanitarian aid near distribution centers operated by the GHF, a group supported by the U.S. and Israel.
The day before, the ministry had reported at least 70 dead and 208 wounded.
