Over the years, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has established himself as a key figure in appointing Shiite positions. But today, the parliament speaker is forced to settle for a compromise. This is how one could sum up the Cabinet meeting held Friday in Baabda. The veto of Justice Minister Adel Nassar blocked the appointment of Zaher Hamadeh (the candidate supported by the speaker) as financial prosecutor in favor of Maher Shaito, a candidate seen as more “consensual” and “approved by everyone, including Ain al-Tineh,” to quote a government member. The power centers are sticking to their usual equation: not giving in to the Shiite duo’s wishes, but without antagonizing them.
