DRUG SMUGGLING

Jordanian army intercepts balloons carrying narcotics across eastern border

The Jordanian army's border guards intercepted remote-controlled balloons carrying narcotics as they crossed into the country over its eastern border on Sunday morning, Jordanian media reports, citing a statement from the army.

Jordan shares its eastern borders with both Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Just over a year ago, Jordan foiled two plots to smuggle millions of Captagon pills into Saudi Arabia, bound for lucrative Gulf markets. At the time, Syria, still under the Assad regime, was a hub for the drug's manufacturing.

Sunday's interception is at least the third such instance since May that the Jordanian army has announced having brought down balloons or drones used to smuggle drugs, although the reports don't always specify whether the air-born devices were incoming or outgoing.
