In recent weeks, reports of a possible resurgence of the jihadist threat in Lebanon have reignited fears of renewed terrorist attacks. Last week, Hezbollah's al-Manar channel reported the arrest of "a cell related to Daesh [the Arabic acronym of the Islamic State group] and connected to Mossad" in Burj al-Barajneh, in Beirut's southern suburbs. On Wednesday, al-Akhbar renewed its accusations, again reporting that Mossad is mobilizing Daesh elements in Lebanon. At the same time, media reports have pointed to a wave of arrests targeting Syrian nationals in Shiite-majority areas, including Chiyah, near Beirut, as well as Karak, in Zahle, and Chmistar, near Baalbeck.
