Two drowned in a few hours off the coast of Tripoli and on a beach in Akkar

BEIRUT — Two people, a man and a six-year-old girl lost their lives in two drowning incidents on Sunday in northern Lebanon, off the coast of Tripoli and on a beach in Akkar, according to our correspondent.

Off the port of Tripoli, a man died after attempting to rescue a child carried away by a strong swell at the northern end of the city. Despite being taken to Nini Hospital in a critical condition, he did not survive despite the efforts of the rescuers.

Further north, in Akkar, a six-year-old girl drowned while bathing near the shore. Despite resuscitation efforts at the hospital, she was declared dead shortly after her admission.

This type of incident is not uncommon on the Lebanese coast and becomes frequent when the sea is rough. Our correspondent points out that the Akkar coastline, which is approximately 18 kilometers long, is exposed to powerful marine currents, with no natural barrier to mitigate them.
