The Iranian army confirmed Wednesday the death of a significant military commander, Ali Shadmani, who had been seriously injured in an Israeli strike on June 17.

"General Ali Shadmani, commander of the central headquarters of Khatam al-Anbiya [affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards], has joined the ranks of the martyrs and died from severe injuries sustained during the bombing carried out by the aggressive Zionist regime," said a statement from this command cited by the official Irna agency.

His death was announced on June 17 by the Israeli army, which described him as the highest-ranking military commander and the closest figure to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. They specified that he died in a nighttime strike on "a command center in the heart of Tehran."

Shadmani had taken his position less than a week earlier, on June 13, following the death of his predecessor, Gholam Ali Rashid, in the first bombings conducted by Israel.

The authorities will pay tribute to him during the national funeral organized Saturday in Tehran for the high-ranking officers and scientists killed during the 12-day war, which ended with the implementation of a cease-fire initiated Tuesday by U.S. President Donald Trump.
