President Joseph Aoun stated on Tuesday that "the state already embarked on a process of reforms and achievements." He made these remarks while meeting a delegation of Maronite bishops at the Baabda Palace who are working in countries of the Lebanese diaspora.
"The state has already embarked on a process of reforms and achievements, admittedly small steps, but with unwavering determination," he said, according to comments reported by the state-run National News Agency (NNA).
"Lebanon remains a land of faith," he added. "The Lebanese of the diaspora represent an essential pillar for the country and the backbone of its sustainability, as they carry their homeland in their hearts."
The president also praised "the resilience, creativity, and ingenuity of the Lebanese people, driven by deep faith, qualities that nurture the hope for a better future."
Reaffirming the fundamental role played by expatriates, the head of state considered that "they constitute a real strength for Lebanon, the foundation of its survival, as they have demonstrated in recent years, facing the numerous crises the country has gone through."
"It is the State's duty to curb emigration, and that's what we are working on," he said.
Since 2019, Lebanon has been experiencing an unprecedented economic and institutional collapse, which has driven thousands of Lebanese to leave the country in search of stability and better prospects abroad.
