Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has escaped at least two assassination attempts since overthrowing dictator Bashar al-Assad last December, according to information shared with L'Orient Today by diplomatic sources. The most recent attempt occurred about two weeks ago, while the first attempt dates back to March.These sources say the assassination attempts have been attributed to jihadist groups, including the Islamic State group, who blame the Syrian president for turning his back on 'jihad,' in other words, governing in a way that does not conform to their ideology.
