BEIRUT — The President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun, and his wife, Neemat Aoun, left Beirut International Airport this afternoon heading to Rome for a visit to the Vatican.
The president will be received Friday by Pope Leon XIV during a private meeting "in accordance with the tradition adopted in relations between the presidents of the Republic and the Holy Father, after which the First Lady and members of his family will join him for a family meeting," according to a statement from the presidency relayed by the state-run National News Agency (NNA).
Aoun had already traveled to Rome in May to participate the following day in the mass for the inauguration of Pope Leon XIV and had also met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
