BEIRUT — Lebanese Army units set up a security cordon in the area of Saqi al-Beddawi on Friday following the explosion of an old shell in the area, according to our correspondent in the North.
Earlier on Friday, a powerful explosion was heard throughout the city of Tripoli, causing panic among residents before the cause could be determined. The shell exploded as result of a grass fire that broke out in the vicinity of one of the scrap pits in the mentioned area and reached the shell. No casualties were reported as a result of the explosion.
Our correspondent reported that civil defense teams worked to extinguish the fire that caused the explosion, and the area was cooled to prevent any new ignition.
Later, security and military teams conducted a comprehensive field survey in anticipation of the presence of any suspicious objects or unexploded ordnance in the vicinity.
