BEIRUT — The Lebanese army indicated, Thursday in a statement, that a shooting occurred during an operation conducted the previous day in Baalbeck, without causing any injuries.
"An army patrol came under fire while carrying out a mission on the Iaat – Tal al-Abyad Road, in Baalbeck. The soldiers returned fire at the sources of the shots, without causing any injuries," the troops wrote. The military then searched the homes of several suspects believed to be involved in the shooting and arrested seven people. "Military-grade weapons and ammunition, as well as drugs," were seized from them, according to the statement.
On Wednesday, our correspondent in the Bekaa, had reported an army raid in the Sharawneh neighborhood in Baalbeck to arrest a repeat offender. After successfully escaping, he was chased and located at a gas station and wounded by army gunfire [...] before escaping again. Local sources had reported injuries among soldiers.
It was not immediately clear if the statement from the troops published Thursday is related to this incident.
The Baalbeck-Hermel region is regularly the scene of security operations conducted by the army in search of fugitives or drug traffickers.
