Gaza’s Civil Defense reported Sunday morning that eight people, including a pregnant woman, were killed in overnight Israeli airstrikes in the central and northern parts of the besieged Palestinian territory, where Israel has intensified its offensive.

“Six martyrs and several wounded were transported after Israeli airstrikes in Jabalia and Nuseirat,” Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for the emergency response agency, told AFP shortly after dawn.

Five of the dead and several injured — including children and women — were pulled from the rubble of a home belonging to the Daqa family in Jabalia, in northern Gaza, he said.

Some of the bodies were “charred,” he added. People remained missing under the debris, and “Civil Defense has no search equipment or heavy machinery to lift rubble, rescue the wounded, or retrieve the dead.”

Bassal later reported two additional deaths, including a pregnant woman, in a strike on the Nuseirat displacement camp in central Gaza, a densely populated area already devastated by the war and facing a dire humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment when contacted by AFP.

Israel resumed its offensive in mid-March after a two-month truce and stepped up operations on May 17, aiming to destroy Hamas, free remaining hostages, and take full control of the Gaza Strip.

The Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, 2023, left 1,218 people dead, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Of the 251 people kidnapped that day, 57 remain held in Gaza, at least 34 of whom have died, according to Israeli authorities.

More than 53,901 Palestinians — the majority civilians — have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory campaign, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, whose figures are considered reliable by the UN.
