U.N. on Wednesday condemned Israeli shots during a visit by foreign diplomats to Jenin in the occupied West Bank, calling for a "thorough investigation" by the Israeli authorities into this "unacceptable" act.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "is alarmed by reports that what the Israeli army called warning shots were fired toward diplomats, including U.N. staff," said his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

"These diplomats, including U.N. staff, came under fire, whether warning shots or otherwise, which is unacceptable," he added.

"It is clear that diplomats doing their job should never come under fire or be attacked in any way .... Any use of force against them is unacceptable," he insisted.

"We call on the Israeli authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, share the findings with us, and take all measures to ensure such an incident does not recur."

The Israeli army acknowledged on Wednesday warning shots during a visit by foreign diplomats organized by the Palestinian Authority in Jenin.
