Iran executes perpetrator of deadly Azerbaijan embassy attack in Tehran

On Wednesday, Iran announced it had executed the perpetrator of a deadly attack at the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran in January 2023, which escalated tensions between the neighboring countries.

The attack resulted in the death of an embassy employee and injuries to two others after a gunman stormed the diplomatic premises.

Iran claimed that the assailant's motives were "personal," whereas Azerbaijan accused Tehran of "encouraging the attack." Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev described the incident as a "terrorist attack" at the time.

Both nations expelled diplomats reciprocally as they blamed each other for the incident.

The attacker was executed Wednesday morning "in accordance with the law of retribution," according to Iran's judiciary. This law is applied in murder cases in Iran at the request of the victim's family who desire the capital punishment to be enforced.

Local media identified the person as Yassine Hosseinzadeh, an Iranian married to an Azerbaijani. The execution comes amid a thaw in relations following a rare visit to Azerbaijan by Iran's President Massoud Pezeshkian in late April.

President Pezeshkian expressed hope that "the process of mending bilateral relations will continue promptly," according to the official IRNA agency. The two nations also held joint military exercises on Sunday. However, several issues continue to complicate their relations.

Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic in the Caucasus located northwest of Iran, is a close ally of Turkey, with significant cultural and linguistic ties. Azerbaijan maintains strong connections with Israel, a sworn enemy of the Iranian regime and a major arms supplier to Baku.

Iran fears that Israel may one day use Azerbaijani territory to launch an attack. Another point of contention is the proposed Zanguezour corridor, which would run along the Iranian border.

Azerbaijan aims to establish territorial continuity to its enclave of Nakhchivan further west, wedged between Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. Tehran opposes any border changes that would affect its access to neighboring Armenia and Europe.
