The Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip announced Sunday that 33 people, “more than half of them children,” were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the besieged enclave. Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for the emergency response organization, reported “at least 33 martyrs, more than half of them children,” in “a series of intense Israeli raids after midnight and at dawn today [Sunday] in various areas of the Gaza Strip.”

At least 22 people were killed and 100 injured “in Israeli strikes on displaced persons’ tents in the Al-Mawassi area” of Khan Younis in the southern part of the Palestinian territory, he added. According to Bassal, other strikes targeted northern Gaza, where at least seven people were killed in a raid on a home in Jabalia.

On Saturday, the Israeli army announced it had “launched extensive strikes and deployed forces to take control of areas” in Gaza. Its stated objective remains “the release of hostages and the defeat of Hamas,” referring to the hostages taken during the deadly Oct. 7, 2023 attack that triggered the Israeli offensive.
