The Lebanese Army announced on Saturday night that it had arrested a man suspected of being behind rocket fire directed towards Syria on Thursday night, which had heightened tensions in the Hermel region with Syrian security forces.

The suspect, identified by the initials M.N., was arrested in the Hosh al-Sayed Ali area, on the border between Lebanon and Syria, according to the army's statement. He was "wanted for shooting and suspected of being involved in rocket fire from Lebanese territory towards Syrian territory on April 24."

That night, a drone packed with explosives and artillery fire was launched from Syrian territory against a farm located in this area in northern Bekaa, injuring eight. The Syrian authorities accused Hezbollah of firing shells from Lebanon, claiming to have immediately retaliated, while the Lebanese Army reported "fire" from Lebanon. The army then deployed in the area and implemented security measures to ease tensions.

The Syrian General Security announced having intercepted in Qussayr, in the Homs region, near the border, "a cache of weapons hidden in a bus coming from Lebanon." The weapons were seized and the passengers of the bus arrested, the security apparatus announced on Telegram.

In February and March, sporadic clashes had already erupted between clans, reputedly close to Hezbollah, and Syrian authorities. At the end of March, Lebanese and Syrian defense ministers met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. They agreed to strengthen security and military coordination along their common border, known to be porous, stretching 330 kilometers, and signed an agreement in principle for its demarcation. On April 14, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam visited Damascus, where he met Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, to discuss, among other things, border security.
