BEIRUT - President of the YASA association specializing in road safety, Ziad Akl, denounced, in a video posted on X, the danger posed by the presence of manholes without covers in Hazmieh, east of Beirut. These covers have been stolen to be sold as scrap metal. According to him, these unprotected holes constitute a serious danger for residents.

In the video posted on April 21, Akl shows a person who almost fell into one of these holes on a main road in Hazmieh, explaining that this risk is present on almost all the streets of Lebanon. He calls on the Public Works Ministry and the municipality of Hazmieh to cover these manholes.

This is a recurring problem. The association lamented the death of Moussa Bazzi, a displaced person from southern Lebanon during the last war with Israel, who was disabled: he accidentally fell into one of these holes on a street in Ouzai, south of Beirut, on Oct. 8, 2023, with his body only being discovered several weeks later.
