The Israeli army claimed Thursday that it attacked "a Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon" last night, according to a post by its Arabic-speaking spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, on X.
"Hezbollah absurdly exploits civilian infrastructure for terrorist purposes and uses the Lebanese population as human shields," Adraee added, noting that the Israeli army "will act" against Hezbollah's attempts "to rebuild its capabilities or position itself militarily under a civilian cover."
Triggered in Oct. 2023, the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip prompted Hezbollah to open a front from southern Lebanon in support of the Palestinian Islamist movement. The cease-fire agreement in force since the end of November stipulates that only U.N. peacekeepers and the Lebanese army are to be deployed in southern Lebanon, bordering Israel. Hezbollah, significantly weakened by the war, must withdraw north of the Litani River, about 30 km from the Israeli border, and dismantle its remaining military infrastructure in the south.
The Israeli army, which continues to carry out regular attacks in Lebanon and maintains its presence at five strategic points, was supposed to fully withdraw by Feb. 18 from all territories it invaded in the south of the country during the war with Hezbollah, until the truce came into effect on Nov. 27.
