The muhafez of the Bekaa, Judge Kamal Abou Jaoudeh, requested on Tuesday the opening of an investigation concerning the pollution of the Berdawni River, which runs through Zahle, after its waters turned blackish, according to information from our correspondent in the region, Sarah Abdallah. This request follows the publication of a video this week by environmental activist Fouad Semaan Freiji documenting the pollution of the Berdawni.

This is not the first time that the waters of this river have been polluted and taken on abnormal colors. At the beginning of March, the National Office of Litani announced it had launched an investigation after the waters of the Berdawni turned black and white.

In December 2018, the Mimosa sanitary paper production plant, located in Qaa al-Reem near Zahle, was closed after being implicated in the pollution of the Berdawni, whose waters had turned black due to chemical components that had been dumped there. Several months earlier, the inhabitants of Zahle were unpleasantly surprised to see the waters of the river turn red.
