Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri reiterated on Tuesday that a postponement of municipal elections scheduled to be held every Sunday in Lebanon starting May 4 was "unacceptable and out of the question."
In an interview with al-Joumhouria, Berri said: "We see no technical, logistical, legal, political or municipal reason to postpone the elections, even for a single minute."
"We do not have time to make amendments to the municipal law, especially since the election is approaching, and simply making amendments to existing texts could pave the way for a postponement of the deadline, which we do not want," he stated. Regarding the municipal elections in Beirut, Berri stressed that "equality between Muslims and Christians within the capital's municipal council must be maintained and that all parties must strive to achieve this goal."
Lebanon's last municipal elections took place in 2016, and councils were elected for six years. The elections have been postponed three times, in 2022, 2023 and 2024. As a result, many municipal councils have either resigned or are unable to carry out their duties due to a lack of financial and human resources.
