The Israeli army reported on Sunday a projectile launch from Yemen, while warning sirens briefly sounded in Jerusalem, followed by distant rumbling sounds, according to AFP journalists. Sirens sounded in several regions of Israel following the projectile launch from Yemen, the army said in an English-language statement. In a separate Hebrew-language statement, the army indicated that two missiles had apparently been fired from Yemen. Attempts at interception took place, and their results are under review, it added.
According to the Israeli police, air defense sirens were activated in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and central Israel. Residents in these areas were instructed to remain in designated shelters for at least ten minutes after the sirens ceased. On Friday, the Israeli army announced that it intercepted a drone approaching Israel from the east, while Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for launching two projectiles towards Israel.
Since the onset of the war in Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, triggered by an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, the Houthis have carried out dozens of missile and drone attacks against Israel. In the Red Sea, a crucial area for global trade, they have also targeted ships they accuse of having links to Israel. These attacks ceased with the ceasefire that went into effect on January 19, but the Houthis resumed attacks after Israel resumed its offensive in Gaza on March 18.
