Fire in popular Saida markets, 'man with disability' arrested

A violent fire, ignited Thursday morning by "a man with neurological disorders," ravaged part of the fruit and vegetable market in the old souk of Saida, South Lebanon. The suspect had already "set fire to his mother's house" located in the same city about 10 days ago, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA) and L'Orient Today's correspondent in the region.

According to their information, firefighting teams intervened to control the flames, which destroyed a large portion of the market stalls. "Security services have opened an investigation and identified a suspect with neurological disorders, who recently set fire to his mother's house in old Saida," the same sources report.

On site, the president of the municipality of Saida, Hazem Khoder Badih, accompanied by the municipal police commander, Bader al-Kawam, inspected the damage in the Fakhreddine Street market and assured merchants that the municipality had initiated legal proceedings.
