Civil defense workers in Gaza reported that an Israeli airstrike on a house and a tent sheltering displaced people killed at least eight people, including five children, on the first day of Eid al-Fitr.

The strike occurred at the beginning of the holiday marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, as both Hamas and Israel indicated on Saturday that they had received a new ceasefire proposal from mediators, aimed at restoring the truce in Gaza.

"Eight martyrs, including five children, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a house and a tent housing displaced people in Khan Younis [southern Gaza] before dawn," said Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesperson for Civil Defense, to AFP.

A fragile cease-fire that came into effect on Jan. 19 after 15 months of war in Gaza collapsed on March 18 when Israel resumed its airstrikes and ground offensive in the Palestinian territory. Mediators, including Egypt, Qatar and the United States, continue their efforts to restore the cease-fire and secure the release of Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.

A senior Hamas official said on Saturday that the group had approved a new cease-fire proposal presented by mediators and urged Israel to support it. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed receipt of the proposal and said Israel had submitted a counter-proposal in response. The details of these mediation efforts remain confidential.

The ongoing war in Gaza was triggered by the Oc. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data. During the attack, Palestinian armed groups also kidnapped 251 people, 58 of whom are still held in Gaza, with 34 confirmed dead, according to the military.

Israel's military campaign against the Palestinian Islamist movement has killed at least 50,277 people in Gaza, the majority of whom are civilians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, whose data is considered reliable by the UN.
