The Israeli army announced on Sunday that it had intercepted a missile launched from Yemen after airstrike sirens were triggered in several regions of the country.
"Following the sirens that recently sounded in several areas of Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the IAF [Israeli Air Force] before entering Israeli territory," the army said in a statement.
Shortly after the war in Gaza began, triggered by an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, the Houthi rebels of Yemen, supported by Iran and claiming to act in solidarity with the Palestinians, launched dozens of missile attacks against Israel and, in the Red Sea – a crucial area for global trade – against ships they accuse of having various links to Israel. These attacks ceased with the cease-fire that went into effect on Jan. 19, but the Houthis, who claimed responsibility for resuming their missile strikes on Israel, promised to intensify them as long as Israel continued its strikes on Gaza.
The rebels had suspended their campaign during the several-week cease-fire in Gaza, which ended on March 18 when Israel resumed its bombings on Palestinian territory.
