BEIRUT — A General Security member was arrested for allegedly molesting a six-year-old Syrian girl, a security source told L'Orient Today.
Local television station MTV posted a video showing the 49-year-old suspect molesting a young girl in front of a group of children who were with her. L'Orient Today could not independently verify the authenticity and date of the video.
According to MTV, he was arrested by General Security based on the directive of the Mount Lebanon Court of Appeals Prosecutor, Judge Fadi Malkoun.
The news caused an uproar on social media as users called for the harshest penalties to be imposed on the perpetrator as a deterrent to others.
Social Affairs Minister Hanin Sayyed condemned the attack on Thursday evening.
“This act contradicts justice and human rights ... as well as the rights of the child. Child protection and a safe environment are a priority for the ministry,” she said.
“We are in direct contact with the parties responsible for the investigation ... The ministry's team is available for any necessary support for the little girl,” she added.
