The Fatah spokesperson in Gaza on Saturday called on rival faction Hamas to relinquish power in order to preserve the "presence of Palestinians" in the territory, as Israel ramps up military operations and issues threats to displace the population and annex parts of the Gaza Strip.
"Hamas must show compassion for Gaza, its children, its women and its men. We warn of difficult, harsh and painful days ahead for the people of Gaza," said Munther al-Hayek, spokesman for the party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in a message sent from Gaza to AFP.
Al-Hayek called on the Islamist movement “to withdraw from the government scene and fully realize that the coming battle [if it chooses to remain in power] will lead to the end of the Palestinian existence in Gaza.”
