Caught between the turmoil on its southern side and the ongoing disturbances at its northern border, the new government, driven by a wave of change, appears to be growing more and more ensnared in a complex and inescapable geopolitical quagmire.Both in the South and the North, the ‘new Lebanon,’ represented by President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, is trying to limit the damage as much as possible by deploying the army as a buffer force — between Israel and Hezbollah south of the Litani on one side, and between Shiite clans, close to Hezbollah, and the new Syrian army at its northeastern border on the other.Facing a more problematic neighborhood policy than ever, Lebanon is using all available means — political, diplomatic, and military tact and caution — suited to the scale of the challenges.
