A controversial construction project in the city of Sour, which has already encroached on the buffer zone of the marine reserve, according to local observers, has been temporarily halted by a ruling from regional Judge Yolla Ghotaimi. The decision follows a complaint filed by the environmental association Green Southerners. The judge has appointed an environmental expert to inspect the site.

The project, located on land owned by the Ministry of Defense and reportedly intended for army officers, has sparked strong opposition from civil society groups at both local and national levels. Activists raised concerns after observing drilling and concrete structures nearing the boundary of the reserve’s protected scientific zone. They also claim the site contains significant archaeological remains.

Activists, organized under the campaign “Protect Sour Beach and Reserve,” also accuse the developers of failing to conduct an environmental impact study, which is required for projects in ecologically sensitive areas.

Environment Minister Tamara al-Zein confirmed to L’Orient-Le Jour that no such study had been submitted to her ministry. She said she would formally request one.

In a statement, Green Southerners praised the judge’s decision and vowed to closely monitor the legal proceedings.
