Lebanon made a new request for financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), whose delegation completed a four-day visit to Beirut on Thursday. This step, undertaken by Nawaf Salam's government, effectively resets the negotiations between the country and the IMF.
"The team had productive discussions with President Joseph Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, the Central Bank of Lebanon and cabinet members about their policies and reform program. It welcomed the authorities' request for a new IMF-supported program to support their efforts in addressing the significant economic challenges facing Lebanon," wrote the IMF's mission chief for Lebanon, Ernesto Ramirez-Rigo, in the closing statement of the visit published Thursday.
