In 'Taire,' Tamara al-Saadi confronts Antigone with the sacrificed childhood in the world

"I am made to bear the guilt for a story that is not mine," Saadi says on stage. The Iraqi director expresses her anger in her latest play, now touring in France.

In her latest play, Iraqi director Tamara al-Saadi draws on the myth of Antigone to "give a voice to the children sacrificed on the altar of the powerful." The tragedy of Gaza and the killing of the innocent resonate throughout the play, as well as the anxiety of youth in the face of an absurd world beset by climate and geopolitical perils. For her performance, she surrounds herself with 12 actors, including her business partner Mayya Sanbar (Antigone), with whom she founded her company La Base. For the first time, she collaborates with musician Bashar Mar-Khalifeh, who performs his compositions on stage.Child: “Infants” in Latin means “the one who does not speak.” These are the opening words to Taire (to silence someone) by Saadi.
