The Internal Security Forces (ISF) announced the death of one of their officers, Charbel Akl, who was killed at dawn on Saturday in Ajaltoun, Kesrouan, north of Beirut, during an “exchange of gunfire with a gang of armed robbers.”

In a statement, police specified that one of the thieves, a Syrian national born in 1998, was also killed during the incident. The killed officer, aged 34, was from Chiyah. He was a married father of two and was promoted and awarded a medal posthumously.

Local media reported that the gunfire occurred while the ISF patrol with which Akl was deployed was attempting to prevent the theft of electrical cables in Ajaltoun. Other members of the gang of thieves fled the scene.

The theft of cables is recurrent in Lebanon, where the metals contained in electrical wires are resold on the black market.
