The Israeli military carried out an airstrike in the Gaza Strip against several individuals who were retrieving a drone that had taken off from southern Israel, it announced Saturday.
"During the night, a drone was detected flying from Israeli territory into the southern Gaza Strip. A military aircraft hit the drone and several suspects receiving it," the military explained in a statement. According to the Israeli army, drones are used to illegally smuggle weapons into Gaza.
A fragile truce has been in place since Jan. 19 in Gaza after more than 15 months of war between Israel and Hamas, prompted by the unprecedented attack of the Palestinian Islamist movement's commandos on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The Israeli military continues to carry out airstrikes in the territory, claiming to act against fighters digging into the ground to hide explosives near military positions.
