The Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) welcomed on Friday the capture of Ibrahim Houweija, the former head of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence, who is suspected of having assassinated the Lebanese Druze leader Kamal Joumblatt in 1977.

“The party appreciates the efforts made by the Syrian General Security Agency, which led to the arrest of Ibrahim Houweija, accused of supervising the assassination of the martyr Kamal Joumblatt,” the PSP wrote in a statement released by the National News Agency (NNA).

“The party hopes that the investigations conducted by the security service will uncover the large number of crimes committed by the former regime and expose them to public opinion,” it added. Syrian security forces sent reinforcements and launched significant sweeping operations in the west of Syria on Friday after unprecedented clashes with militiamen loyal to former President Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown on Dec. 8, 2024. It is in this context that the new authorities proceeded with the arrest of Houweija, marking a turning point in the management of former regime officials.
